1.1: The End of Summer

Benny: Um… How are things with Harold?

Kim: You know, same old, same old. Things could get better if… oh never mind.

Benny: What?

Kim: If someone got Stacy out the way. Someone like… you.

Benny: (sadly) Stacy and me?

Kim: I think you two would make a cute couple.

Benny: I always thought, you and me, we’d make a cute couple.

Kim: Me and….Ben…I didn’t know you felt that way.

Benny: Remember the ‘Wizard of Oz’ play we did in middle school. You were Dorothy and I was in charge of lighting. When I put the spot light on you, my world lit up. You were so beautiful and alive and vibrant. Ever since that day, all I’ve ever wanted was you to notice me that way. But all you notice is Harold and whenever he feels like it he pushes you away like some toy he’s bored with. I would never treat you that way Kim. I know you’re a treasure and I’d treasure you everyday.

Kim: Ben…I don’t know what to say.

Ben: Just say you’ll give me a chance, one date is all I ask for.

Kim: I’m sorry Ben, but it’s just not there with us. I mean I like you, but I don’t LIKE you like you. You’re my friend. Just my friend.

(Ben walked away defeated. He decided not to give her the note at all. It was obvious all this was pointless.)

(Karen came running out of the house. She had heard everything.)

Karen: Kim.

Kim: What?

Karen: He just pored his heart out to you. And you’re just going to let him leave like that.

Kim: I didn’t want to hurt his feelings, but I don’t like him that way.
