1.10: Confessions
Mrs. Carr: That wouldn’t be fair to her Erika. She’s done nothing to deserve being fired. If anything, if I could afford it, she’d get a raise.
Erika: Then just keep her away from the house.
Mrs. Carr: You know you little sisters and brothers love her. She’s King and Me’chelle’s god-mother. And she’s my friend. Why can’t she come over to see them and me? What harm is it doing?
Erika: It’s just weird. She’s weird. And I don’t like the way you’re close with her.
Mrs. Carr: Erika, nothing is going on. How many times do I have to say that?
Erika: If I hadn’t made you promise and you weren’t married to dad, you’d want to date her, wouldn’t you?
Mrs. Carr: It doesn’t matter because that’s not the situation.
Erika: Then why can’t you answer the question? Why can’t you just say no?
(Mrs. Carr sighed and pulled Erika close. She had let Erika take her far beyond the point, which was Shawn not Sophia.)
Mrs. Carr: Erika, I don’t think about the ‘what-if’s, I think about the what-is. The point is, Sophia and I respect each other as friends. Shawn hasn’t shown that same respect in your friendship. He’s put you in situations that could have been serious trouble for you and Tina and Kenny. This situation of shop-lifting and the previous incident of almost drinking alcohol, it could have been much much worse. You could have been in terrible terrible trouble, it’s only luck those situations didn’t turn out for the worse.
Erika: Maybe it wasn’t luck. Shawn didn’t put any of the stuff on us, did he? He never accused us. He took all the blame.
Mrs. Carr: This time. Next time he may not or next time it may not matter what he says because the situation is to serious. I’m just saying, maybe right now Shawn isn’t ready to be the kind of friend you can depend on.
Erika: So you want me to just ignore him if I see him in the halls?
Mrs. Carr: Of course not, but you’re not allowed to hang around with him outside of school.
