1.17: Love’s Consequences

Once inside, Molly began…

Mrs. Smith: Okay, I’m an open minded lady, I don’t judge too much, but please tell me what I’m hearing isn’t true.

Mrs. Carr: Well I’d have to know what you were hearing.

Mrs. Smith: That you’re having an affair with the woman outside.

Mrs. Carr: An affair?

Mrs. Smith: Isn’t that what it’s called when you sleep with someone who isn’t your husband?

Mrs. Carr: Is this why you didn’t bring Frank to Day Care this morning?

Mrs. Smith: I think it’s a justifiable worry for me and the other parents.

Mrs. Carr: We take great care of the kids here. Aren’t the kids evidence enough that this is a good Day Care?

Mrs. Smith: The problem is the example you’re setting. A day care should not be the hot seat of some illicit affair.

Mrs. Carr: But it’s not. Sophia and I are not having an affair, by your definition anyway.

Mrs. Smith: Then by what definition are you having an affair?

Mrs. Carr: The emotional part, the part I can’t control no matter how hard I try. But as far as the physical part, the part I can control. The most we’ve done is kiss a few times, that’s it. And it was never in front of the day care children, it was never even in front of my children. What Mrs. River saw was one kiss in front of my home. And that does not happen regularly. It was just… a moment. I was upset and she was there and she was so sweet and understanding and I had been repressing my feelings so long and I didn’t want to anymore. And it was… it was stupid, but I can’t change it.

Mrs. Smith: So no kissing in the Day Care or groping each other or anything?

Mrs. Carr: NO! What do you think I …(long pause) Well, to be honest, there was one kiss this past Valentines day that was sort of unexpected and happened in the office, but none of the children saw it and no slip up like that has happened since.
