1.17: Love’s Consequences
Hotel security had broken up the fight and both boys had been sent home. Kim had accompanied Benny.

Kim: You got to stop being so insecure.
Benny: What I got to be secure about?
Kim: You got me don’t you? Does it matter how many people know?

Benny: Yes, because you’re you. And if you really didn’t care, you wouldn’t be making all this effort to hide the fact that we’re dating . And the only reason I could come up with for hiding it is you wanted Harold to keep thinking of you as available. And it isn’t working for me anymore.
Kim: What?
Benny: I’ve wanted you forever Kim, but I can’t stand the way I got you. It doesn’t feel real because it isn’t real. I’m not going to be your ‘thing to do’ while you’re waiting on Harold.
Kim: Are you saying what I think you’re saying?
Benny: Yeah, good-bye Kim.

Kim: You’re breaking up with me?
Benny: As far as I can tell, we were never really together.
Kim: You’re going to regret this.
Benny: Maybe I will, but at least I won’t be a doormat anymore.
(And he did regret it as she stomped out the door, but he couldn’t stand this feeling of being the backup guy anymore. He wanted someone to care about him the way he cared about her.)
