1.16: Betrayed

(The two women stood there in silence a long time before anyone spoke)

Mrs. Carr: Sophia, I trusted you.

Sophia: I know

Mrs. Carr: And you go behind my back and arrange something like this with my child.

Sophia: Francisco is very convincing and he’s hardly a little child.

Mrs. Carr: He’s not an adult.

Sophia: I’m not the only one who treats him like a grown-up.

Mrs. Carr: You’re right, it’s my mistake too. I’ve not only forgotten his age, I’ve forgotten yours. And this is going too far for some… some… some crush.

(Those words hurt Sophia more than she could say.)

Sophia: Some crush?

Sophia: Okay I understand you being angry and maybe, just a little, I agreed to this for the wrong reasons. But I regretted it as soon as I had the information. And I never asked for the responsibility of breaking your heart. But I invited the responsibility and once I had it, I couldn’t pretend I didn’t have it.

Mrs. Carr: So you let my son turn it over to me.

Sophia: He saw it as a good thing.

Mrs. Carr: You knew better and you let it happen anyway. It doesn’t matter what’s in this envelope. You broke my trust.

Sophia: I’m sorry. What else can I say to make this right?

Mrs. Carr: At the moment, nothing. Just go.

Sophia: Dawn.

Mrs. Carr: Just go, I am not in the mood for I’m sorry.

(With a heavy heart, Sophia turned to leave.)
