1.7: The Lost Son
Act III
(David met Shawn and Zack at the train station the next day.)

Zack: You know why I called you?
Mr. Stevens: Because I would have found out when I called to check on him next month.
Zack: No, she asked me too. She asked me to give him you. She asked me not to fight for him. She asked me to make sure Shawn got to know his dad. Calling you was the hardest thing I ever did. I love him, but I loved her to. So I gave her what she wanted because she thought it was best for him.
Mr. Stevens: I love him, too. I tried to do what was best for him.

Zack: By hiding him from everyone you knew?
Mr. Stevens: The situation was complicated.
Zack: No, it was very simple, he was your son.
(Shawn came running up to Zack and Zack lifted him up in the air.)

Zack: You ready to go buddy?
Shawn: You know I’m not. I want to stay with you Zack.
Zack: Your mom wants you to get to know your father.
Shawn: You’re my father.
Zack: I feel the same way, but we both know what we feel doesn’t change the fact David is your real dad. And he wants you Shawn, so give him a chance.
(They hugged tightly and then he let him go.)
(As they rode the train, David didn’t quite know what to say to the boy. He never thought he could be this close to his son and yet so far away. He wanted to make this work, he just didn’t know where to begin.)

Mr. Stevens: I’m sorry about your mother. She was really…
Shawn: Can we not talk about her, sir?
Mr. Stevens: Sir? I’m your dad, you don’t have to call me sir.
Shawn: I can’t call you dad, I don’t know you, sir.
Mr. Stevens: Then call me David, but not sir.
Shawn: David, will I ever see my da–Zack again.
Mr. Stevens: Sure he can visit us. You can write and call and maybe you can even have a week or two in the summer with him. It’s not my intention to take him out of your life. It’s just that with your mom gone, you belong with me.
Shawn: If you say so.
