1.8: The New Year
Act I
(Christmas has come and gone on Kelley Avenue and the new year was fast approaching. But at the River House there is anything, but peace. Once again, Mie River is finding herself at odds with her father. )

Mie: …but me and Francisco are both New Year babies, do you know how rare that is? And if I share a birthday with a friend, why not celebrate with him?
Mr. River: Since when was Francisco Carr such a close personal friend of yours?
Mie: Since when did you dislike Francisco Carr?
Mr. River: I don’t dislike him, but some of the people in his circle of friends…

Mie: Here we go again. It’s all about Harold. Look dad, this isn’t a Harold thing. Francisco didn’t have to offer to share his party, but he did offer.
Mr. River: We can throw you a perfectly good party here, on your birthday, not New Years Eve. Besides, you have a 9:00 curfew, allowing you to share Francisco’s birthday celebration would mean letting you stay at his party until at least midnight, which is way past your curfew.
Mie: I think my 9 o’clock curfew is pretty stupid anyway. I’m in High school. Most of my friends can stay out later than that. And New Years Eve, it’s my last big thing before school starts again. Francisco’s my friend, he’s trying to be nice and share a party with me.
Mr. River: Francisco is older than you…
Mie: By two years, exactly, so what?

Mr. River: Right or wrong, there will be older guys at this party?
Mie: Only the guys I hang out with at school anyway.
Mr. River: And it’s amazing that as soon as you aquired this older group of friends, you thought it was okay to question me.
Mie: Because you’re being unfair. I’m turning 15 and you still treat me like a baby.
Mr. River: Well, our 15, no still 14 year old will not be partying past midnight with 16 and 17 year old boys.
