1.7: The Lost Son

Mrs. Carr: Look, maybe there’s– (she pauses trying to find the words) maybe there’s an attraction, but it can’t happen. You know that. I’m not free. There’s only two choices here, friendship or nothing.

(Sophia felt like her heart was going to burst into a thousand peices. Ellis thought rejection was going to be hard, but it was nothing compared to knowing the object of her affection was feeling the same way and it just couldn’t happen because of a wedding ring. Complete and total rejection would have been a lot easier than this. Then she could turn away, pick up the peices and start over instead of holding onto the hope of a day when it could happen, when it could be, when the wedding ring wasn’t in the way, even if it that day wasn’t today. And that small sliver of hope won out.)

Sophia: I can live with friendship, I’d hate nothing.

Mrs. Carr: I’d hate nothing too. *sigh* How did we get in this situation?

Sophia: You kissed me back.

Mrs. Carr: We can’t let this get out of control.

Sophia: *thinking* It’s already out of control.

Mrs. Carr: You still staying for Christmas?

Sophia: If you still want me there.

Mrs. Carr: Of course I want you.

Sophia: Then lets go home.

(So they got in the car and went back to the Carr House. And even though both of them intended to enjoy the holiday with the kids, they honestly wondered how much longer they could go on pretending.)
