Everything that Shouldn’t Happen
PART 4: How will it all end?
Original Cindy was closing her locker door when she saw a very happy Max bouncing over to the lockers. She knew that glow as well as she knew anything. Max had been with someone last night.
“What’s up girl,” Max said with a big smile.
“What’s up with you? What or should I say who got you so happy?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Max said with a smile.
Normal called out a delivery, she happily volunteered to take it. Alec came in just as she was leaving. He must have said something to annoy her, because she rolled her eyes and threw him the finger on her way out.
“Hello Miss Cindy,” Alec said as he approached her with that sly smile of his.
‘Here it goes,’ Cindy thought. ‘Being an average male, he stakes his claim to fame.’
“You know,” he whispered. “I’ve been thinking…”
“Alec,” Original Cindy said. “We can’t ever.”
“I figured as much,” Alec said sitting down. “But I’ve had other things on my mind.”
“Oh really,” Cindy said shocked and a little offended that he could forget so quickly.
“Come with me,” he said walking outside. They found a quiet corner to sit down and talk.
“You know you’re hot right,” Alec said.
“You know you full of shit right?” Original Cindy replied. “You’re an average male, you got what you wanted and you’re done.”
He laughed. “I didn’t quite get what I wanted, but let’s be honest, we wanted to see how far we could go and we went as far as we could.”
“You know the most annoying thing about you?” Original Cindy asked.
“What?”
“You’re right,” Original Cindy replied.
“But I think we’re not the only person who’s been hiding a secret,” Alec replied.
“What are you talking about?”
“Max and Asha.”
“What about them?”
“Let’s just say, I think they’ve become closer. It’s been on my mind for awhile now. I could tell something had changed between them.”
“I know you ain’t saying what I think you’re saying,” Original Cindy replied. “Because if you are, Original Cindy is sure you’ve gone crazy.”
“We’ll see who’s crazy,” Alec replied. “Just watch her today.”
“No, I mean even if…Asha?”
“Stranger things have happened,” Alec said. “And Asha is–”
“A little hottie, I’ve noticed.”
They both smiled at this mutual acknowledgment. Cindy felt she was back on even ground with him.
“If only to prove you wrong, I’ll participate in you’re little investigation.”
Original Cindy didn’t catch up with Max again until Lunch. She asked if there was anything new with Logan, Max said she wouldn’t know she hadn’t really spoken to him lately, but she meant to call him today. Then she mentioned Asha and there was this unmistakable change in her face.
“Asha’s turned out to be a better person than I thought,” Max replied. “Much better.”
She was truly curious then. Something didn’t add up. The grin on Max’s face was more than an “I was wrong about her” type of turnaround. The girl was glowing. But even if Max had…Asha? She couldn’t bring herself to believe Max and Asha had–. She shook the image from her head.
She watched Max talk to Logan on the phone, apologizing for her distance in the last week. She was pleasant with Logan, but there was still something, different about her. Then Asha came to Jam Pony, weird because she had never been there. She didn’t speak to anyone, but Max. Then they exchanged something, a small slip of paper. Alec appeared at her shoulder.
“So was I right?”
“I don’t know,” Cindy replied. “Maybe.”
Asha turned to leave, but there was this little touch. Asha touched Max’s hand ever so lightly and then their eyes met and they looked at each other. In the activity of Jam Pony, the only people who noticed it were the two people looking for it.
“Something is going on there,” Alec said.
Original Cindy didn’t want to admit he was right, yet.
They knew they were wrong for doing it, but curiosity drove them. So Original Cindy stayed by Max’s side after work until she “claimed” Logan called her. Alec followed her. She did go to Logan’s and Asha was there. He waited awhile and Max left. A couple hours later, Asha came out. And they greeted each other with a kiss and some touches that passed the boundaries of friendly. They got on Max’s bike and drove to a hotel?
Max couldn’t believe she was back here and second night. She didn’t want to be anywhere else, however. But how long could she hide this from her best friend. She didn’t want to look like some silly little girl experimenting. And She wanted to keep this secret sacred.
“Asha,” Max said as they sat on the bed together.
“What?”
“What are we doing?”
“I think it’s pretty clear,” Asha said. “Do you want to stop?”
“I want, I don’t want–” Max struggled to explain.
“You don’t want people to know,” Asha stated. “You’re ashamed?”
“No, I just–I don’t want to share,” Max said. “Can I ask, before me, were you with a female?”
Asha blushed. “Yeah, I was, one girl, awhile back.” Asha looked away, “I mean I still like guys, but–”
“You don’t have to explain anymore,” Max said as she leaned in for a kiss.
“Alec, we’re wrong,” Cindy said as she stood outside of the hotel room,” Original Cindy told him.
“We’ve come this far,” Alec told her. “I say we seal the deal.”
“If something is going on,” Original Cindy began.
“I saw them kiss and not a peck on the cheek. Come on, you have to want to see it?”
She did, but then she thought about how she would have felt if Max had walked in on them.
“No,” Cindy said. “Original Cindy got to much respect for her girl to do this.” Take me home,” Cindy said.
Alec groaned. “All right, but you owe me.”
“What’s the price?”
“It’s negotiable,” Alec replied throwing all that pretty boy charm out again.
He threw an arm around her and she let him. Oddly enough, she didn’t mind the friendly gesture. And that’s where they were, friendly. And it was somehow cool with the both of them.
