1.4: Secrets
(Erika went in her room and turned on her Alicia Keys CD.)
(Her mother found her there and smiled, Erika was so much like her sometimes. When she was younger, she’d do the same thing. Go up in her room and blast her favorite music when she was upset. But she didn’t quite understand why she was so upset.)
(Erika’s mother sat down after turning off the music.)
Mrs. Carr: What’s wrong baby? What did she do that upset you so much?
Erika: Nothing, she just doesn’t belong.
Mrs. Carr: Belong where?
Erika: Here.
Mrs. Carr: I see, the thing she did wrong was become friends with me… outside work that is.
Erika: It’s not that I don’t want you to have a friend, just not her.
Mrs. Carr: Why?
Erika: She was in dad’s spot. Miss Molly was never in Dad’s spot and she use to be your friend.
Mrs. Carr: Not really baby. To be honest, it’s been a very long time since I had a friend. Molly and I were… good acquaintances. You and Kenny adored each other and when you were little we monitored your play dates. That was the end of it. I liked Molly very much, but we aren’t close, we never were. Look, you’re my first baby girl and I love you, so you don’t have to feel threatened by me getting close to another person. Nothing and no one will change us.
Erika: So, I’m still your first best girl?
Mrs. Carr: Of course. But you’re getting older and spending way more time with your friends. So why can’t I look for someone else to fill the space you’re leaving.
Erika: But I don’t have too hang out with other people.
Mrs. Carr: Yes you do, it’s part of growing up. And oh yeah, I have a gift for you.
