1.4: Secrets

(Mrs. Carr stepped away from her child and toward Sophia.)

Mrs. Carr: Why didn’t you just explain her to me before? Why didn’t you tell me right away?

Sophia: I don’t know, scared I guess. I work with kids Dawn. Taking care of kids becomes real controversial when you’re… well when you’re like me. I didn’t know how the kids parents would re-act. I needed this job, I didn’t have anything else at the time, and I just couldn’t risk it.

Mrs. Carr: Sophia, I’m not talking about the parents or the Day Care, I’m talking about us and what I thought was becoming a friendship built on trust.

Sophia: It is, but I’ve dealt with reactions all over the charts. There are people who’ve been cool with it and people who ended up hating me just for me being honest about who I am. And with work in the mix, the situation just seemed to fragil to test. And maybe I thought you wouldn’t want to be… close to me because of it. And I liked… being close to someone again. I didn’t want to chance losing it.

Mrs. Carr: You wouldn’t have. I really don’t care who you date. As long as it doesn’t affect work, it’s not a problem.

Sophia: Really? You don’t hate me?

Mrs. Carr: Of course not. I can’t remember the last time I had a friend like you. It would take a lot more than you dating women to change it.

(And then to seal in her mind that all was okay between them, she gave her a big hug, which did not make Erika happy.)
