1.4: Secrets
Sophia: Okay, even though it’s good that he trust you. You know, to be loyal to him while he’s away for long periods of time.
Mrs. Carr: No one wants a woman with eight children and two more on the way. He knows he has nothing to worry about.
Sophia: Don’t underestimate trust. Last relationship I was in, jealousy destroyed it.
Mrs. Carr: Well Sophia, you’re young and I’m sure he was too. You’re a very beautiful young woman and if this guy really cared about you, well I’m not surprised he felt a little threatened by other men noticing that. I mean, guys are. . .well guys are guys.
(There was a moment where Sophia thought about correcting her pronoun, but she didn’t want to chance that Mrs. Carr would have her mother’s reaction, so she kept that one little detail to herself. She was surprised she said as much as she did, but it was all out in the open now, well most of it.)
Sophia: There was no threat there, believe me. Dre was just… I don’t know, too hurt by a past relationship. While I was away at camp, Dre cheated on me with the girl from that past relationship. That’s why we broke up.
Mrs. Carr: How did you find out? That he cheated I mean?
Sophia: I came home and Carmen was in our apartment. It was the worse moment of my life. You know, Dre didn’t write me once over the summer, didn’t bother to find out when I was coming back, just…gave up on us.
Mrs. Carr: I’m sorry.
Sophia: I’m over it. Even though it was my first serious relationship. The first person I ever said I love…I’m sorry, I’m going on and on about myself.
Mrs. Carr: It’s okay. It’s your first big heartbreak and I know it’s hard. You don’t have to pretend to be over it. And maybe you and Dre aren’t over, maybe once the wounds heal you can get back what you think you lost.
Sophia: No, there’s no more me and Dre. I’m done with it.
(As this conversation was going into uncomfortable territory, they spent the rest of the drive talking about other things.)
